About the Author
Wei Pan, PhD, is Associate Professor and Biostatistician in the School of Nursing at Duke University. His research interests include causal inference (confounding, propensity score analysis, and resampling), advanced modeling (multilevel, structural, and mediation and moderation), meta-analysis, and their applications in the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Dr. Pan has published over 50 articles in refereed journals, as well as other publications, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals. He is the recipient of several awards for excellence in research, teaching, and service.

Haiyan Bai, PhD, is Associate Professor of Quantitative Research Methodology at the University of Central Florida. Her interests include resampling methods, propensity score analysis, research design, measurement and evaluation, and the applications of statistical methods in the educational and behavioral sciences. She has published a book on resampling methods as well as numerous articles in refereed journals, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals. Dr. Bai is a Fellow of the Academy for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership and a Faculty Fellow at the University of Central Florida, where she has been the recipient of several awards for excellence in research and teaching.

I graduated in Physics and Mathematics 45 years ago but spent my career working in communications and computers. One of my retirement objectives has been to read and fully understand Roger Penrose's epic work "The Road to Reality" that he published in 2004. I found out within 150 pages of his 1100 page book that I my knowledge of complex mathematics and calculus needed a crash course refresher if I wanted to fully understand the principles of physics and mathematics that governed our universe. I found that Professor Downing's method of teaching mathematics through the use of background stories involving progressive problem-solving and practical explanations to be ideally suited to my learning style. This book is ideal for both the beginning student and the person needing a refresher course.

I absolutely love this book. It is written in a story format that follows characters in the land of Camorra and how they use calculus to overcome problems. I find the text easy to read as well as understand the relevance of what is being presented as it always being applied to real world like problems. There are plenty of practice problems at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge and really helps to sharpen your skills. I bought this book for self-study and so far it has been a great asset to my learning of calculus.

Very well done and I found it easy to follow, and very informative as far as it goes with calculus

I love this book.

The most objectionable part of the e-book is the math type. The equations are rendered too small. In order to see them, they must be double tapped. You can't read the text and the equations on a page by simply viewing the page. I try not to be burned this way by math or science ebooks. I failed this time.
