Review
'Tushnet provides an authoritative review of the growing literature on comparative constitutional law... This book, however, is much more than a review of the existing literature and is a must read for both newcomers and those with more experience in the field.' -- H. Shambayati, Florida Coast University, Choice 'Professor Tushnet provides an insightful overview of cutting-edge issues arising in comparative constitutional law. From changes in the conception of the separation of powers to approaches to the adjudication of the limits on fundamental rights, Tushnet offers both a snapshot of the current debates as well as a critical engagement with them. The book manages to accomplish the daunting feat of appealing to the serious scholar of comparative constitutional law as well as being accessible to those who are beginning their exploration of this field. It also fuses recent scholarship in political science literature and constitutional law in an illuminating combination.' -- David Bilchitz, University of Johannesburg and Director, SA Institute for Advanced Constitutional Law, South Africa 'This work is a most welcome addition to the rapidly growing literature on comparative constitutional law. Mark Tushnet has drawn on his considerable knowledge of a wide variety of constitutional arrangements, coupled with at least a decade of reflection on current practice and likely trends, to prepare what is accurately described as an 'Advanced Introduction' to the field. The book is organised around four key themes, each of which is analysed through the lens of structure: constitution-making, constitutional review, rights analysis and government. The result is a useful blend of substantive knowledge and critical analysis. The work makes comparative constitutional law eminently accessible to relative newcomers to the field. Experienced comparativists will also find that it offers insights, however, as they grapple with familiar methodological questions.' -- Cheryl Saunders, Melbourne Law School, Australia 'Advanced Introduction to Comparative Constitutional Law by Mark Tushnet is a short book that packs a great deal for different audiences and should be an indispensable resource for students as well as scholars in this rapidly expanding field. On one level, the book provides a clear and succinct introduction perfectly fit for the novice. I read this essay originally around 20 years ago for a Russian Intellectual History class. This essay summarizes many of the anxieties of the time - it is, like the title says, An Essay on Tolstoy's View of History. It was a quick read (~1.5 hours) but might seem a lot longer if you are not familiar with the topics and people like Proudhon, Belinsky, Herzen, The Decemberists etc....The brief summary is that he thinks Tolstoy is a fox who has respect and wishes he could make himself into a hedgehog. The other review is hysterical. Did The Onion write that? The appendix has some good material both by Berlin and reviewers.

Thought provoking and more enjoyable than I expected for a Tolstoy analysis.

Pedantic, but interesting. Have to read War & Peace first. More political philosophy than I was ready to get into. Book club.

A brilliant and intense discussion of Tolstoy and his work. Wonderfully concise and intellectually challenging. For any student of Tolstoy or philosophy in general, this is a fascinating work.

This was a very difficult text to read. I had to read slowly and repeatedly in order to get the gist of what the author was seeking to expose and explain about the philosophy, sociology and other beliefs of Lev Count Tolstoy as these are described and revealed in his magnum opus, 'War and Peace'. [I have not read WaP, but will do so]. This tect is for scholars and academics - who would probably score it much higher than I have. It just was not my 'glass of tea'.

The title essay is one of the most important pieces of furniture in the mental drawing room of the 21st century mind. It is not that it is without caveat, but it's sweeping premise has probably been used by lots of writers in the 20th century, and the reputed difference between the hedgehog and the fox goes back to pre-Christian times from a Greek poet.

This is a classic work, revered by academics and scholars. I am neither of those and had a hard time following the name-your-enemy doctrinal disputes that make up a good part of the argument. Still, it's worth a read for its very deep understanding of Tolstoy.

This material is awesome! Read this book, if you like to learn a little bit more about politics and freedom.
